About Victoria Seeds Limited

Africa’s Leading Agro Solutions Company

Victoria Seeds Ltd founded in 2004 has grown into Uganda’s leading seed house catering to smallholder farmers in Uganda and exporting to the regional markets of South Sudan, DR Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Our core business is to transfer seed technologies from research into the hands of farmers with the aim of improving crop yields, income and nutrition of rural households. We are marketing over 95 seed varieties of cereal, legume, vegetable, oil, horticultural and forage crops.

Our company disseminates seeds to all areas of Uganda through more than 400 agro dealer outlets.

Victoria Seeds Ltd had humble beginnings with a small capital base and a workforce of only 5 people. It is today, the seed industry market leader employing 140 people and more than 1000 farmers in its seed production chain. To achieve our mission, we opened a Sales Outlet in 2006 at Nakivubo place to enhance seed delivery to agro dealers. In 2007 we established a research facility in Kawanda for research and development of superior varieties adapted to our environment.

In 2008 our company commissioned a seed processing and research facility in Gulu to improve seed delivery to communities resettling in Northern Uganda after 20 years of war and started engaging largely women in the regional seed industry supply chain. In 2012 the company commissioned the third Seed Processing Plant in Masindi to double processing capacity and meet the increasing country demand for improved quality seed. We plan to relocate our head office to the prestigious Kampala Industrial and Business Park and are truly proud of our role in developing a robust and sustainable seed system in Uganda.

What motivates us

Overall crop yields in farmers’ fields in Uganda are well below their potential averaging only 1/3rd of the actual. This underperformance is mainly attributed to the limited availability of improved quality seed and the absence of extension service. Furthermore, the gender dimension in Uganda’s farming system show that smallholder farmers are largely women constituting 77% of the total. Although women produce 70 – 75% of the country’s food output, they own only 7 per cent of the land and their lack of control over productive household resources remain one of the root causes of gender poverty because their capacity to access credit for productivity enhancing inputs is severely limited. (Human Development Report 2008)

At the macro level, the majority of women fail to utilize their entrepreneurial talents, not only because they lack collateral and have limited access to start up capital, but also due to time poverty which hinders their capacity to benefit from poverty reducing programs such as agricultural support services, market information, credit and educational activities. Women spend on average 9 hours per day on care labor activities, leaving them with very limited time for economic activities. On the other hand, their male counterparts spends only 1 hour on care activities.

Our team is passionate about empowering rural women because we firmly believe that business can only thrive where society also thrives and part of building good sustainable business is to help establish safe, secure, stable and peaceful societies. At Victoria Seeds Ltd, we strive to develop communities in the areas where we operate and focus on empowering rural women by engaging them in our seed supply chain, providing training and appropriate machinery for production and post harvest which are important tools for easing women’s arduous and time consuming tasks. We therefore guarantee markets, improve their income, transform them from subsistence based producers to commercial farmers and enhance their participation in off-farm economic activities.

Our core purpose

To be Ugandan farmers’ most trusted seed source.

Mission

Our mission is to provide quality cereal, legume and horticultural seed with related extension support that assures our customers of improved nutrition and income.

We are committed to bringing consistent value to our customers through our brand identity and corporate philosophy.

We are crop scientists and farmers. The big difference is why we farm, to research and develop, produce and market new varieties adapted to our changing climate.

Our corporate philosophy

We never compromise quality and rather lose a sale than supply inferior seeds to improve cash flow. Our team understands that it takes years for farmers to adopt new varieties and yet it takes only one season of poorly performing seed to lose their trust and business.

Our belief

Here at Victoria Seeds our team knows that just being good is not always good enough and no company became great by just being good. They became great only after going the……. extra mile.

Our business

We offer more than just seed, we manage risks because of climate change agriculture is an inherently risky business and farmers must deal with uncertain weather, disease, pests and increasing cost of production.

We provide in the seed:-

To manage risks we offer farmers more choices in our varieties with crop protection products and provide extension support to achieve optimum yield potential
